Scattered Light Models of Protostellar Envelopes: Multiple Outflow Cavities and Misaligned Circumstellar Disks

چکیده
Ground based imaging, imaging polarimetry, and recentHubble Space Telescope WFPC2 and NICMOS images of protostars have revealed very complex scattered light patterns that cannot be entirely explained by 2-D radiation transfer models. We present here for the first time radiation transfer models of T Tau and IRAS 04016+2610 that are fully 3-D, with the aim of investigating the effects on image morphology of multiple illuminating sources and infalling envelopes that have been shaped by multiple outflows. For T Tau we have constructed scattered light models where the illumination of the surrounding envelope is by a binary with each source surrounded by its own small circumstellar disk or envelope. We find that the asymmetries in the WFPC2 image of T Tau can be reproduced if the disks in the binary system are misaligned, consistent with a recently discovered bipolar outflow believed to originate from the secondary. For IRAS 04016+2610 we find that the observed scattered light pattern can be reproduced by scattering in an envelope with cavities carved by two sets of bipolar outflows, suggestive of an embedded binary system. We present new Keck images at 0.9 µm and OVRO 1.3 mm continuum images of five Class I protostars in the Taurus star forming region. We analyze these data in conjunction with broadband spectral energy distributions and 8-13 µm spectra from the literature using a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code. By fitting models for the circumstellar dust distributions simultaneously to the scattered light i...
متن کاملMultiple Bipolar Molecular Outflows from the L 1551 IRS 5 Protostellar System
The multiple protostellar system L1551 IRS5 exhibits a large-scale bipolar molecular outflow that spans ∼1.5 pc on both the NE (redshifted) and SW (blueshifted) sides of the system. We have studied this outflow within ∼4000 AU of its driving source(s) with the SubMillimeter Array. Our CO(2–1) image at ∼4 (∼560 AU) resolution reveals three distinct components: 1) an X-shaped structure spanning ∼...
متن کاملThe Birth of High Mass Stars: Accretion and/or Mergers?
The observational consequences of the merger scenario for massive star formation are explored and contrasted with the gradual accumulation of mass by accretion. In high density proto-star clusters, envelopes and disks provide a viscous medium which can dissipate the kinetic energy of passing stars, greatly enhancing the probability of capture. Protostellar mergers may produce high luminosity in...
متن کاملHST/NICMOS Imaging of Disks and Envelopes Around Very Young Stars
We present HST/NICMOS observations with ∼ 0. 1 ≈ 15 AU resolution of six young stellar objects in the Taurus star-formation region. The targets of our survey are three Class I IRAS sources (IRAS 04016+2610, IRAS 04248+2612, and IRAS 04302+2247) and three low-luminosity stars (DG Tau B, Haro 6-5B, and CoKu Tau/1) associated with Herbig Haro jets. The broad-band images show that the near-infrared...
متن کاملON PROTOSTELLAR DISKS IN HERBIG AeyBe STARS
The spectral shape of IR emission from Herbig AeyBe stars has been invoked as evidence for accretion disks around high-mass protostars. Instead, we present here models based on spherical envelopes with an r dust density profile that successfully explain the observed spectral shapes. The spectral energy distributions of eight primary candidates for protostellar disks are fitted in detail for all...
